Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?

A tax credit reduces the amount of tax you owe dollar-for-dollar, while a tax deduction lowers your taxable income. That means a $400 donation to a Qualifying Charitable Organization like ACYR reduces your Arizona state tax bill by $400 — not just your income.

Is there a minimum donation amount to qualify for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit?

No — there’s no minimum amount. Even a $5 donation qualifies when recorded on Arizona Form 321.

How much can I claim for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit?

For 2025, individuals can claim up to $421, and married couples filing jointly can claim up to $841 for gifts to Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCOs) like ACYR.

Can I carry unused credits forward to future years?

Yes. If you can’t use your full credit this year, Arizona allows a five-year carry-forward period. You can apply the remaining unused portion of your credit for up to five consecutive years, as long as the total doesn’t exceed your tax liability in any given year.

Can tax credits generate a refund?

No. Arizona’s charitable tax credits are non-refundable. This means they can reduce what you owe down to $0, but they cannot generate a refund beyond that amount.

When is the deadline to make a qualifying donation?

You can make your donation up to April 15 (or the official state filing deadline) to apply it toward the previous tax year. This gives you extra time after December 31 to support ACYR and still claim the credit.

Your Support Changes Lives — and You Get It Back

When you give through Arizona's School Tax Credit, your donation helps ACYR students gainconfidence, skills, and opportunities — all while giving you a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit.
